HOW MIGHT WE Spur RESIDENTIAL WATER Customers TO Conserve?

CHALLENGE

In the United States, 36 states face water shortages in the next decade, even under non-drought conditions. WIth water priced far below market value, there is little economic incentive to conserve. The domestic water crisis calls for a design solution that brings water conservation to the forefront in the same way that hybrid cars presented a solution to reduce C02 emissions and oil consumption.

STRATEGY

Our team conducted primary research with residential users and water utility and sustainability experts to understand consumption patterns and their impact. Along with a deep dive into the competitive landscape and the latest behavioral change theories, this work led us to define clear design criteria for a device that motivates users to reduce their water usage.

SOLUTION

FLUX is a measurement device that attaches to standard water outlets. Its LED display provides real-time usage feedback. An internal Bluetooth chip translates data to multiple platforms that aggregate household usage.  An online community of users share data for context and comparison and feature gamified challenges to reinforce and further motivate behavioral change.
